1906 Lodge is what its name alludes to, an early 1900s stately historic boardinghouse transformed into a luxury boutique hotel. The Italian-style hotel with craftsman interior has been graciously restored to its original beauty, and then some, right down to the wood finishes and leaded glass windows. No detail was spared to transport you to an earlier era boasting aviation breakthroughs, Tent City, and the inspiration for Frank Baum’s classic tale, The Wizard of Oz.
One block off Orange Street, the island’s dining and entertainment hub, and two blocks from the beach and Hotel Del Coronado, the location puts the hotel within walking distance of everything you’ll want to see and do. Families are welcome, but the hotel clearly caters to adult travelers who will appreciate its tasteful and tranquil surroundings. The historic 1906 Lodge is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, a quiet weekend retreat, or a serious groupthink.
1906 Lodge Rooms and Suites
1906 Lodge has five styles of accommodations from which to choose. Each of the 17 historic rooms and suites is named after some tidbit of Coronado Island history, which is reflected by its interior décor. Expect dark wood furnishings, framed historic photos, and island and nautical accents. Suites surround a courtyard garden filled with fragrant flowers and greenery; a reflecting pool with a bubbling fountain is the garden’s centerpiece. Each ground-level suite has a semi-private patio with a comfortable seating area looking onto the garden.
Six historic Lodge Rooms in the main building are spacious at 300 square feet, and have been restored to their original craftsman-style splendor. Each room has a single queen-size bed and private bathroom. They are the hotel’s only rooms and are conveniently located near amenities such as the parlor, breakfast area, and business center.
Garden suites are 375-square-foot, second-story suites with balconies overlooking the manicured garden and offering island sunset views. Each suite has a private bath with Rain shower, king-size bed, and fireplace. The room also has a comfortable seating area and wet bar.
Garden Spa Suites on the ground level surround the tranquil courtyard garden and are a bit more spacious at 400 square feet. Each suite has a single king-size bed, private bath with spa tub and shower, fireplace, seating area, wet bar, and private porch/patio. Garden Spa Suites with Sofa Bed are also available with the same room amenities, and are the only accommodations on-site for four guests.
The Grand Spa Suite is the largest accommodation at 500 square feet. It has a large in-room Jacuzzi spa tub, king-size bed with facing fireplace, spacious seating area, private bathroom with spa tub and shower, wet bar, and private patio or balcony. All rooms and suites in the hotel provide plush robes and linens, TVs with DVD players, and access to a central beverage center with coffee, tea, and bottled water. Suites also have refrigerators and coffee makers.
Room tips:
Quiet hours are from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Children under 13 are not allowed in the Historic Lodge Rooms. Children under eleven stay free in suites, if no additional bedding is required. Cribs are $25 per night.
1906 Lodge Hotel Amenities
The upscale 1906 Lodge could just as easily pass for a bed and breakfast. The cheery breakfast area is filled with sunlight, and has an adjoining veranda in the garden courtyard, if you prefer to eat and sip your morning coffee to the soothing sounds of the fountain. Complimentary gourmet breakfasts include a daily hot entrée, like their delicious breakfast burrito, baked eggs Florentine, or carrot cake pancakes; breakfast entrées are vegetarian. They also serve hard boiled eggs; breads, bagels, and cereals; homemade granola, scones, and muffins; yogurt; seasonally fresh fruits; and juices, coffees and teas.
Late afternoons bring other treats to the forefront when the gracious hotel staff – many of whom have been there since its opening – serve a five o’clock selection of snacks and drinks in the cozy parlor; think, red velvet cupcakes and lemonade, or homemade cookies and iced tea. They also offer a wine and cheese alternative at this time featuring California and local wines. Gluten-free options for both breakfast and afternoon snacks are available upon request.
In keeping with the daily sumptuous food amenities, you’ll likely find a snack bag of home baked goodies on your bed upon arrival. If your plans prevent you from having breakfast, you can get “breakfast to go” with advance notice, which includes a thoughtfully packed arrangement of yogurt, fruit, nuts, string cheese, granola bars, and juice to send you on your way.
Although you’re within walking distance of nearly anything on the island, it’s fun to ride past beautiful historic mansions, or take off on 15-miles of bake paths. Colorful loaner beach-cruiser-style bicycles are complimentary. Explore the island the easy way by renting one of the hotel’s street-legal golf carts for a small daily fee. Complimentary loaner beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels will help you have a fun day at the beach where you can sun, swim, surf, stroll, and take in a beautiful sunset.
Guests park free in a large, modern parking garage underneath the main lodge, something you’ll appreciate once you discover how quickly street parking disappears on the popular island, especially during summer. There are two conference rooms and a business center on the property, and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
1906 Lodge Coronado Neighborhood
When you stay at 1906 Lodge, you are in the heart of Coronado Island, yet the neighborhood is quiet and serene. A block away, on Orange Avenue, you’ll find restaurants, shops, theaters, and museums. A nearby favorite is Lamb’s Players Theater. Delux Dogs, Clayton’s Coffee Shop, and the Creamery are quick and tasty stops, but you’ll find everything from sushi to an Irish pub here. The hotel is also two blocks from the historic Hotel Del Coronado, and Coronado Central Beach, the only white sand beach in San Diego. The Coronado Golf Course is a seven-minute walk from the hotel, or two minutes by golf cart. Power boat, sail boat, and Jet Ski rentals are a few blocks away in Glorietta Bay.
For a dreamy getaway on Coronado Island, pair this romantic hotel with Chez Loma French bistro. The restaurant is within walking distance and is the place to go for simple, but elegant, authentic French cuisine in a charming Victorian home-turned-restaurant. Try the peppered filet mignon, or vanilla infused sea scallops. Add a private gondola ride through the beguiling canals of Coronado Cays to top off your stay. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine or champagne – The Gondola Company provides the ice bucket, glassware, wine opener, and soft blanket.
