Powerhouse Park, Del Mar

Powerhouse Park is long grassy area running parallel to the ocean. It is located just north of the popular 15th Street surf break, and is nestled between Coast Boulevard and Del Mar Beach. A children’s playground is at the south end of the park, and Powerhouse Community Center is on the north end. Concrete walkways connect picnic areas and the playground, and sandy paths lead to the beach. Distressed wood benches offer picturesque views of the beach and ocean. The majority of the park is flat green space with lush vegetation at the perimeter. Seagrove Park sits on bluffs across the railroad tracks at the park’s south end.

What to Do at Powerhouse Park

Powerhouse Park provides a relaxed, family oriented, and even romantic atmosphere. Visitors are often found practicing tai chi, yoga, flying kites, and picnicking while enjoying the picturesque scenery. There are a few barbeque areas and picnic tables located throughout the park that guests can utilize. Visitors can take advantage of the wooden benches scattered around the park to watch the crashing waves, enjoy intimate conversation, or catch a sunset. Those who are visiting with children will enjoy the barefoot friendly park equipped with a jungle gym, swings, slides, and a tot lot that is a designated dog free zone.

Perhaps one of the most well-known activities in Powerhouse Park is the Del Mar Twilight Summer Concert where free concerts are offered during the summer months. This is a great way for visitors to socialize, picnic, and enjoy the sunset while listening to great music. Another notable feature of this park is its close proximity to the popular 15th Street surf break, making the park ideal access for experienced surfers. With the Del Mar Beach at the foot of the vast, grassy park, visitors can easily sunbathe or take a swim in the ocean.

Powerhouse Essentials

Powerhouse Park allows dogs as long as they are on leashes; they even have a doggie water fountain. Dogs are not allowed in the park’s tot lot. Bathrooms are located at the Powerhouse Community Center under the stage area; there is also a shower spigot available here. Two other bathrooms are provided at the 17th and 25th Street lifeguard towers. Lifeguard services change with seasons, so consult stations for current lifeguard hours. Powerhouse is a no-smoking park. The biggest challenge at the park is parking. Street parking is metered, and the parking lots require payment. For those who arrive early, or don’t mind a little walk there is free street parking in the neighborhood and at the city offices lot at Camino Del Mar and 11th Street. The Powerhouse Community Center at the north end of the park is a popular venue for weddings and special events.
